Kinja'd!!!

As some of you know my gf’s 2.5rs (not the one in the photo) was stolen the last Friday in September. It was recovered three days later by police and held in inpound for about a week. On Friday we got to go take a look at the car at the shop that will be performing the inspection and repairs on the vehicle. Below is a list of the contents recovered in the vehicle.

Womens Clothing (Sweatshirts, Bikinis etc.)
2 pairs of Air Jordans
Womens makeup
Empty meth bags (possible crack, but some sort of crystal substance)
a pair of Leica Binoculars (Valued at ~500$ used)
stolen mail
a cell phone
A dildo and vibrator

The mail and cell phone we turned over to police, I asked if they wanted the dildos but they politely declined. One pair of jordans were kept to clean thoroughly and sell and the Leicas will be hitting ebay soon.

Up until this point we had no idea how the vehicle was recovered and thought that they found it parked on the side of the road.
Turns out a cop saw the car, ran the plates and saw it was stolen and pulled it over. One woman was arrested for the theft of the vehicle and an open warrant, the two other passengers in the car at the time were arrested for open warrants.

This is somewhat good news because it means the vehicle was driveable at the time of recovery and not just found in a ditch. We are more hopeful now that mechanical damage will be minimal. There was some damage to the rear bumper but insurance will cover that and the new ignition and the replacement altimeter and compass (OEM Option) that was stolen out of the car.

So when is it getting a fuel pump cut off switch?

What year is the car? I’m curious, how does somebody even steal a car these days? I thought with chipped keys and security systems it was much, much harder to steal a car anymore... did they just pop the lock and use some resistor-fooling tool to trick the computer into starting?

I mean, obviously you can scoop one up with a tow truck, hide it and strip/sell off parts, but I thought the electronics were much harder to fool today.

Once the car is repaired we are going to take it and my S2k to our preferred mechanic and have him install them. Still try to work out the best hiding spot for it

Nah its a 2001, standard key you can have made at a key cutter for 3 dollars. They jammed a drill bit (which we found in the car) into the ignition and ripped it out. they got in by jimmying the lock... also not hard on an 01

Subarus of this era are incredibly easy to not only get in to but get started once inside.

You, uh, might want to get the interior detailed.

From everything I’ve seen, technology makes it easier to steal. They make transmitters specifically for keyless go cars now.

Make it super obvious but label it backwards. And maybe have a hidden one in addition.

Given how and where the Leicas were found, aren’t they likely to be stolen, and if so, by selleing them aren’t you somehow guilty of selling stolen contraband or whatever? Just curious.

I prefer using several switches wired in series. By installing them in different orientations you can create a kind of passcode needed to start the car.

Alarm systems come off as kinda pointless and mostly annoying to me. We will be installing some new security measures on the car that more actively protect it rather than just make noise.

my guess is there are a few dead panels where switches would be installed (I had an 00 2.5 RS but can’t recall) If so get a factory fog light switch or whatever fits and use that spot. Looks OEM, nobody will think about it.

Id love to but it is with the cops now so who knows. being that these people were arrested driving it, seems pretty clean cut and closed... although i dont think the woman was the original thief cuz it looked like two guys in the video but it was really poor quality

That was one of the spots I was considering but I also dont want it in plain sight. ive heard of some cool setups where you had to plug the cigarette lighter into the port to have the car start.

label them all kinds of real(but not hooked up) things. Like activate fire suppression, ECU power, etc. Then have one labeled fuel pump that does nothing.

Right, not just ‘alarm’ but some kind of ignition kill or fuel kill as well. I always expect the two to be tied together, forgetting that sometimes “alarm” doesn’t actually include any kind of security measures.

Holy wow. That is quite the recovery.

My ‘85 Suburban diesel was stolen from my high school parking lot and recovered 3 hours later and immediately impounded for being abandoned. Which is odd because it was just in a mall parking lot. It wasn’t a looker, but she drove great. We think it was a police scam because the impound lot charged us $300 just to recover my belongings from it and it would have been $1800 to get the vehicle from impound and we decided to just buy another vehicle instead.

The weird thing was that I had a nice stereo and a couple hundred dollars worth of textbooks in the back seat, but they only stole my brand new off road tires. They even put used street tires back on the original wheels and then parked it where the cops found it. Very weird.

Yeah the kill switch we will do but i doubt an alarm. the car is parked in an underground garage 9 floors below us. I doubt wed hear it anyway

Kinja'd!!!0

Okay, yeah. Noisemakers aren’t that useful... but an integrated system where you lock the doors with a fob and it triggers the kill switch(es)... is what I’m thinking of. It doesn’t hurt to have a noisemaker giving the car some attention, but at the same time they are often ignored. Best of luck!

Right. I am just glad I didn’t find any adult toys in there while gathering my belongings. Plus I was kind of happy to have it gone. Plus I got a Jeep Wrangler after that.

It also doesn’t help that the barrels and keys on this era of Subarus wear out easily making it even simpler to get past the locks. One time I unlocked and started my friends 98 Legacy using only the key from my 2001 Outback. The key and barrels were so worn out it was like I had his key.

Yeah and the keyless entry systems were super shitty too. Ive seen people unlock other 2.5rs’s with the remote for other subarus. Its crazy. They had such shitty systems in those cars I wouldnt be surprised if thats how they actually got in. To start the car they hammered a spade drill bit into the ignition. We found it under the seat when we cleaned all their shit out of our car.
